A good gate frame is a patient thing. Powder-coated steel, seasoned oak or a decent hardwood can hold its shape, colour and straightness for fifteen years or more with very little attention. The hinges, latches, drop bolts and screws holding it up rarely manage half that.
The reason is simple: hardware lives in the worst place on the whole structure. Hinges sit in a pocket of trapped damp, ground bolts sit in wet gravel, and latches collect grit, leaf litter and the constant abrasion of a gate being slammed shut. Add wind-driven rain, salt air and winter grit spray from a nearby road, and a cheap zinc-plated hinge will start showing orange staining within a season or two.
Buying hardware properly the first time costs perhaps 30 to 50 per cent more than the budget option and saves you an afternoon on your knees with a drill every couple of years. Here is what to look for.
Two finishes do the heavy lifting in British gardens.
What to avoid is vague wording. "Rust-resistant", "weatherproof" and "anti-rust coated" on a label usually mean electroplated zinc, sometimes under a micron thick. It looks smart in the packet and dull brown within eighteen months.
The small components decide how long the visible ones last.
Hinges are rated in pairs, and the rating assumes even loading and a properly braced frame. For a timber driveway leaf of 1.5 to 2.5 metres, choose hinges rated at roughly twice the leaf weight, and fit three where the frame allows. Adjustable hinges are worth the extra because gates settle, and being able to lift a dropped leaf 10mm without re-drilling is a quiet luxury.
Garden gates bring a different problem: wind. A solid 1.2-metre board gate presents a large sail area, and a gust puts far more load on the hinges than its own weight ever will. If your gate is solid and exposed, use heavier hardware than the weight alone suggests, fit a gate stop so the latch takes no impact, and make sure the bottom of the gate clears the ground by 20 to 30mm year-round — a gate dragging on wet paving will rot its hinges free.
Side and driveway security gates need fittings that resist leverage as well as rain.
Before you buy, read two numbers: the weight rating per pair of hinges, and the anti-corrosion warranty. Ten years on the finish is a reasonable benchmark for quality galvanised or stainless hardware; three years suggests the maker knows something you do not. Check the small print for coastal exclusions and for maintenance conditions — most warranties require an annual clean and oil.
Once fitted, spend twenty minutes each spring. Oil hinges with a light machine oil or silicone spray rather than a water-displacing spray, clear grit from latches and bolt keeps, and check that fixings are still tight. Hardware looked after like this will comfortably outlast the gate it was bought for, and that is exactly the point.
Open-bar gates, sensors and good lighting can deter intruders while keeping front gardens bright and welcoming at night.
